Dear Readers,
The Center for Biological Diversity sent the U.S. government a notice of intent to sue on Wednesday. The environmentalists are calling on the Trump administration to reverse its decision to freeze funding for important conservation efforts to protect endangered species. “The Trump administration’s freeze of funds for anti-poaching patrols and other international conservation efforts is infuriating, heartbreaking and highly illegal,” said Sarah Uhlemann, the Center for Biological Diversity’s international program director, in a press release from the environmental nonprofit. “These Fish and Wildlife Service funds help protect elephants, rhinos and other animals around the world that Americans love. No one voted to sacrifice the world’s most iconic wildlife to satisfy the reckless power-madness of an unelected billionaire.”
There is a great deal of fear in the American middle class right now, with uncertainty over biofuel quantities, exemptions for small refineries, bird flu, budget cuts and looming trade wars. But the greatest threat is the potential of a full-blown agricultural crisis. “Two decades ago, the Renewable Fuels Association (RFS) created a thriving market for renewable fuels, saved family farmers from economic collapse and ushered in the most prosperous era of American agriculture.https://ethanolrfa.org/
The government of Costa Rica will revive an old energy project that aims to replace fossil fuels with biofuels. The initiative is a response to a request from the country’s vice president, Stephan Brunner, to the Legislative Assembly to process the initiative on energy transition in fuels presented over a year ago. https://www.elpais.cr/2025/03/01/costa-rica-rescata-vieja-idea-de-introducir-biocombustibles/

United States government strongly objects to a recommendation on “sustainable” aviation fuels made during the 13th triennial meeting of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP). This recommendation to the ICAO Council on multi-cropping, the practice of growing two or more crops on the same land, for sustainable aviation fuels, would unfairly penalize U.S. farmers and significantly benefit Brazil over the rest of the world. The U.S. government believes this proposal is premature and lacks sufficient technical or scientific justification. Despite these issues, CAEP adopted the recommendation, harming U.S. farmers and the aviation industry, while increasing incentives for deforestation of threatened tropical forests. https://www.state.gov/united-states-objects-to-sustainable-aviation-fuels-recommendation-at-international-civil-aviation-organization-meeting/
Taiyo Oil Co. has selected Honeywell UOP Ethanol to Jet (ETJ) technology to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at its Okinawa facility in Japan. This plant is based on Honeywell UOP’s first ETJ license and engineering design in Asia Pacific, with a production target of 200 million liters per year. The plant, expected to start operations in 2029, is the fifth of its kind in the world and will supply SAF to both domestic and international markets, contributing significantly to the growing demand for SAF driven by the aviation industry’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions. https://ess.honeywell.com/us/en/about-ess/newsroom/press-release/2025/02/taiyo-oil-selects-honeywell-ethanol-to-jet-technology-for-production-of-sustainable-aviation-fuel

Naturgy will supply renewable gas to Aena in Spain to advance the decarbonization of its airport network. The agreement reached between the two companies includes the supply of around 83 GWh of natural gas over the next two years, of which at least 20 GWh will be biomethane. With this gas, the airport operator will significantly reduce its emissions related to the consumption of thermal energy and make progress in decarbonization through the consumption of sustainable and competitive energ. https://www.naturgy.com/en/press-release/naturgy-to-supply-renewable-gas-to-aena-to-boost-the-decarbonisation-of-its-airports/
According to Research and Markets, the global grains market is expected to reach a volume of 2.56 billion tonnes by 2032, up from 2.3 billion tonnes in 2023. Supported by the rising demand for staple foods and growing population, the market is expected to continue growing at a compound annual growth rate of 1.20% between 2024 and 2032, according to the report. The report highlighted that major grains producing regions, including the United States, China, India, and Brazil, are increasing their production to meet global demand. “The biofuel industry plays a crucial role in shaping grains market dynamics. Corn, in particular, is a primary feedstock for producing ethanol, a biofuel that is increasingly used as a renewable energy source. With the increasing demand for cleaner energy alternatives to reduce carbon emissions, the use of grains in biofuel production is expected to increase,” the report said. https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2025/02/24/3031326/28124/en/Global-Grain-Market-to-Reach-2-56-Billion-Tons-by-2032-New-Grain-Market-Outlook-Report-Released.html
