UN wants to criminalize the spread of disinformation.

Dear readers

First, an information note and announcement of the 14th Conference of the Polish Chamber of Biofuels. Next, we’ll cover the latest information and reports from the past week.

Over 70% of renewable energy capacity growth occurred in Asia, while other regions, particularly Africa, lagged behind, according to new IRENA data published on July 10 by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The 2025 presentation and report are attached.

UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights Elisa Morgera presented a new report to the General Assembly on July 7 calling for the criminalization of the spread of disinformation related to the climate crisis and a complete ban on fossil fuel lobbying and advertising by the industry. In the imperative to disintegrate our report, Morgera argues that the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and other rich fossil fuel countries are legally bound by international law to phase out gas, oil, and coal by the end of the decade, in addition to compensating communities for the damage caused. “There is no scientific doubt that fossil fuels (coal, gas, and oil) are the primary cause of climate change and the main driver of other planetary crises—biodiversity loss, toxic pollution, inequalities, and mass human rights violations. Several UN mechanisms have already identified an international human rights obligation to phase out fossil fuels and related subsidies,” says the report, which is attached as an appendix.

The global biofuels market is estimated to be valued at USD 110.9 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach USD 326.42 billion by 2034. Market research firm Statifacts expects the market to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.4% during the forecast period from 2025 to 2034. Increasing initiatives for appropriate regulatory measures and research projects, the growing need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and the growing popularity of biofuels as an environmentally friendly biofuel for road transportation are driving global market growth. https://ceo.ca/@GlobeNewswire/biofuels-market-size-to-exceed-usd-32642-bn-by-2034

Geoff Cooper, President and CEO of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), expressed his full support for the agency’s proposed renewable energy commitments for 2026 and 2027. He called the proposal “an important step toward realizing President Trump’s vision of lower gasoline prices, stronger agriculture, and a dominant U.S. role in the energy sector.” “The RFA fully supports the proposed 15 billion gallons of conventional renewable fuels implied volumes for 2026 and 2027,” Cooper said. “This provides growth potential for the ethanol industry as E15 continues to gain momentum in the marketplace.” More at: https://www.brownfieldagnews.com/news/biofuel-groups-testify-at-epa-hearing-on-2026-27-renewable-fuel-standards/

Eni announced the inauguration of the country’s first vegetable oil extraction plant in the central-southern part of the Republic of Congo. The Italian energy company noted that the production will be destined for Enilive’s biorefineries, where it will be converted into biofuel to contribute to the decarbonization of the transport sector. According to the company, the Loudima agricultural site, with a capacity of 30,000 tons of vegetable oil per year, will be supplied with oil crops grown on degraded and unused land or in intercropping systems. This is part of an innovative regenerative agriculture project developed in collaboration with local stakeholders. https://www.eni.com/en-IT/media/press-release/2025/06/eni-launches-its-first-agri-hub-republic-congo.html

The signed agreement between DN GRAR Group and BSOG Energy governs the cooperation between BSOG Energy and DN AGRAR in the development of one of the largest biomethane production plants in Romania, providing a long-term supply of organic manure from DN AGRAR’s farms. The agreement follows the cooperation agreement signed in October 2024. Within the next eight months, the planning of the plant is to be finalized and all permitting procedures completed. The final investment decision is expected in the first half of 2026. Subject to regulatory approvals, operations are scheduled to begin in the first half of 2028. BSOG Energy will fully finance and implement the estimated investment of EUR 30 million. DN AGRAR also has the option to participate with an equity stake at that time. https://dn-agrar.eu/newsletter.php?id=6484

The government of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh is promoting the cultivation of Napier grass, also known as elephant grass, throughout the state to increase farmers’ incomes. The report highlighted that the local government will provide subsidies to encourage Napier grass cultivation throughout the state. The state government will also provide the roots of the hybrid Napier grass to some beneficiaries and then purchase them from them at double the price, the report added. https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/allahabad/state-govt-now-promoting-napier-grass-cultivation/articleshow/122165770.cms

The Turkish government is requiring airlines and jet fuel suppliers to increase the use of SAF, with the goal of reducing aviation emissions by 5% by 2030. The report notes that this move is aimed at complying with the United Nations’ International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) emissions reduction program, which will become mandatory starting in 2027. The new regulations require airlines to use sufficient SAF on international flights involving Turkey to achieve the 5% emissions reduction target. They also confirm that the country’s jet fuel suppliers will procure SAF to meet this target and that the domestic oil refineries Tüpraş and SOCAR will begin producing SAF, the report adds. https://www.hydrocarbonprocessing.com/news/2025/06/turkey-to-set-saf-mandates-for-airlines-suppliers/

M-Lex reports Lantmännen argued in front of a European Union court that its defense rights were breached during the European Commission’s investigation into alleged anti-trust ethanol price benchmarking manipulation that would see its fine of 47. 7 million euros overturned. The company says that its rights were breached when the EC settled with another defendant before launching its investigation into Lantmännen. The case is expecte to shed light on how the EC should negotiate with defendants who want to settle when others don’t want to. https://www.mlex.com/mlex/articles/2362676

Aircraft departing from Warsaw, Krakow, and Katowice airports can now be fueled with SAF, following ORLEN’s inclusion of the fuel in its commercial offering. The sale of SAF is one of several ORLEN initiatives to promote the decarbonization of aviation. As part of the HySPARK (Hydrogen Solutions for European Airports & Regional Kinetics) project, ORLEN also plans to build a hydrogen refueling station at Warsaw Chopin Airport. The station will supply hydrogen to zero-emission ground vehicles at the airport and will be used as part of the HySPARK initiative. https://www.mobilityplaza.org/news/41942

The Indian Sugar Manufacturers’ Association (ISMA) has called on the government to restore the 50/50 split in ethanol supplies to oil marketing companies to ensure that sugarcane ethanol has the same market access as grain ethanol. Given the low sugar prices plaguing mills, ISMA wants to ensure stability for mills so they can pay farmers on time. Sugar stocks are stable, and there will be sufficient supplies when mills resume processing in the third week of October, ahead of an expected bumper harvest. https://www.indiansugar.com/uploads/Lok_Sabha_Sectt_Final.pdf

With the development of renewable hexahydrophthalic anhydride (HHPA), Beckers and Anodyne Chemistries in Germany aim to lay the foundation for advanced coating solutions using a key low-carbon raw material. HHPA is an essential component of high-performance coatings. However, its carbon intensity contributes significantly to the carbon footprint of Beckers’ high-performance coatings, and it is derived entirely from petrochemical feedstocks. Currently, there are no sustainable HHPA alternatives on the market. https://bioplasticsnews.com/2025/07/10/beckers-and-anodyne-chemistries-to-develop-bio-based-hhpa/
