DHL use SAF for transport from Berlin to Shanghai

Formula E and DHL have transported team and equipment from Berlin to Shanghai using DHL’s GoGreen Plus service, utilising Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for air freight between the two cities. Around 257 tonnes of cargo were transported between the two cities using SAF, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% compared to paraffin aviation fuel. Manuela Gianni, Head of Motorsport Italy at DHL, said: “Our partnership with Formula E represents a shared commitment to sustainability and innovation. We are proud to support Formula E with our logistics expertise and global network to organise exciting races while reducing our environmental footprint. New research suggests that 100% renewable superethanol (E85) is a viable substitute for fossil fuels to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in transport. While the European Union passed a regulation in 2023 that bans the sale of new cars that emit fossil CO2 from the tailpipe from 2035, a window of opportunity remains open to define carbon-neutral fuels amid concerns over pure electric vehicles. The ethanol industry believes that sustainable biofuels should be included in the scope of carbon-neutral fuels if it can be demonstrated that these solutions are as climate-friendly as all-electric solutions. The European Union (EU) has committed to ambitious carbon reduction targets centred on the blending of E10 in its member states. The U.S. Grains Council (USGC) recently sent a delegation to the region to build relationships with industry stakeholders and policy makers to further support the EU’s climate initiatives. The team arrived in Oslo and met with advisors from the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment on 13 May. The day’s agenda also included a meeting with ZERO, a non-profit organisation leading carbon emission reduction strategies in Europe. https://grains.org/council-visits-nordic-region-to-discuss-ethanol-blendings-role-in-greenhouse-gas-reduction-policies/

Pro Farmer reports that both Germany and France on calling on the European Commission to stop imports of used cooking oil-based biodiesel from China due to the potential that they could be fraudulent. The biodiesel industry had called on the EC previously to investigate the allegations due to significantly increased volumes of imports over the past couple of years, which led to the Commission opening an investigation. https://www.agweb.com/markets/pro-farmer-analysis/germany-france-push-eu-halt-import-fraudulent-biofuel

Avfuel Corporation has set new standards with SAF supply contracts at Paris Le Bourget Airport (LBG), Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport (BOD) and Clermont-Ferrand Auvergne Airport. Operators can now refuel in a way that significantly reduces the carbon emissions of their flight over its entire life cycle. Avfuel customers can purchase SAF through the Avfuel Contract Fuel Programme at all three sites. https://www.avfuel.com/Details-Page/ArticleID/669/Avfuel-and-Neste-Ink-Extension-of-SAF-Supply-Agreement

Everfuel has opened a hydrogen refuelling station at the bus depot of the Frankfurt bus company In-der-City-Bus (ICB) in Germany. The refuelling station is owned by the bus company ICB and will supply 23 zero-emission fuel cell buses used in daily urban and municipal transport, the company announced. Everfuel developed and built the refuelling station and will supply ICB with hydrogen under a three-year contract. The hydrogen will be supplied by Everfuel’s hydrogen trailers. https://www.sustainable-bus.com/news/everfuel-hydrogen-bus-depot-icb-frankfurt/

TerraX srl and SWEN Impact Fund for Transition, announced the creation of a joint venture to invest in the biomethane sector in Italy. TerraX is led by biogas expert and pioneer Michael NIEDERBACHER, who has designed and built more than 220 plants in 12 countries around the world. The SWEN Impact Fund for Transition is the first European impact fund dedicated exclusively to financing renewable gas infrastructure. The joint venture will build and operate more than 10 biomethane projects to produce renewable gas on Italian soil, which will be fed into the grids or commercialised as bioLNG. https://www.europeanbiogas.eu/terrax-srl-and-swen-capital-partners-invest-more-than-100me-in-biomethane-projects-in-italy/

The German government has authorised the unrestricted sale of diesel fuels in accordance with the DIN EN 15940 fuel standard in Germany. The sale of unblended diesel produced from 100% renewable raw materials (HVO100) was previously only permitted in certain segments, such as local public transport. The authorisation that has now come into force allows the sale and use of HVO100 diesel in all segments in Germany. With this authorisation, Germany is following other EU countries such as Belgium, the Netherlands, Finland and Sweden, where the sale of HVO100 diesel at public filling stations has long been permitted. https://www.hydrocarbonprocessing.com/news/2024/05/germany-approves-unrestricted-sales-allowances-of-100-renewable-diesel/
