In addition to the main nutrients, mineral fertilizers often also contain trace elements or micronutrients such as iron, manganese, zinc and boron. These are required in small quantities, but are nevertheless crucial for healthy plant growth. A deficiency of these trace elements can lead to certain diseases or growth disorders.

Mineral fertilizers are produced from natural mineral sources or by chemical processes. Examples of natural mineral fertilizers are potassium sulphate, calcium nitrate and phosphate rock. These materials are mined and processed to produce fertilizers. Chemical fertilizers are produced by synthesizing inorganic compounds such as urea, ammonium nitrate and potassium chloride.

The use of mineral fertilizer offers several advantages. Firstly, they are usually well balanced and contain a defined amount of nutrients, which allows farmers and gardeners to precisely control the nutrition of their plants. Secondly, they are easy to store and transport. Thirdly, they can be quickly absorbed by the plants, which leads to rapid growth results.
